Terms of use
What you may do with the archive, what we ask of you, and how to read the rights statement on an item.
This page is a draft. It was written from what the website actually does and Queer Heritage South have not yet reviewed it. If anything here matters to a decision you are making, please ask us before relying on it.
This website is run by Queer Heritage South, a project of Marlborough Theatre Productions
(registered charity no. 1145506). By using the site you agree to what is set out here.
Using the archive
The archive is free to browse and free to search. You do not need an account and we do not
ask who you are.
You are welcome to link to anything on this site. Please link to the item's own page rather
than to an image file, so that whoever follows the link sees the description and the
credit alongside the picture.
Copyright, and how to read an item
There is no single licence covering the whole archive. Each item carries its own rights
statement, because the material came from many different people and organisations, and
what you may do with it depends on which. The rights statement is in the details panel
beside the item.
Of the 564 items currently public:
- 412 are licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0:
Attribution, NonCommercial, ShareAlike. You may copy and adapt them for non-commercial
purposes, as long as you credit the source and share anything you make under the same
licence. This is the licence contributors agree to when they give material to the
archive, so it covers most of what you will find. - 58 name a rights holder rather than a licence, such as Traumfrau Brighton, Museum of
Transology, Queer in Brighton, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, The Keep, the V&A, or an
individual photographer. That tells you who to ask. It is not permission, and some of
them say "all rights reserved" in as many words. - 94 have nothing recorded. That means we do not know, not that it is free to use.
Please ask us.
If in doubt, ask. We would much rather answer an email than have somebody assume.
Commercial use
The most common licence in the archive excludes commercial use. If you want to use
something in a book, a broadcast, a paid exhibition or anything else commercial, contact us
and we will help you find who to ask.
Contributing material
If you send us material through the contribute form, you keep ownership of
it and you agree to it being published under
CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Please only send
material you have the right to send. Our
privacy notice sets out what we do with your details.
Asking us to take something down
If something in the archive should not be there, tell us and we will take it down while we
look into it. That includes finding yourself in a photograph you did not agree to appear
in, material you contributed and have changed your mind about, and anything you believe
infringes your copyright.
Email archive@marlboroughproductions.org.uk.
We have a takedown policy as part of our Collections Plan.
What we ask of you
Please do not try to break into the site, scrape it in a way that makes it slow for
everybody else, or use anything here to harass or identify people against their wishes.
This is a community archive about people's lives, and much of it was given to us in trust.
What we cannot promise
We do our best to make the archive accurate, but it describes the past as our contributors
and archivists have recorded it, and records get corrected. We cannot promise the site is
always available or always free of errors. Where we link to another website, we are not
responsible for what is on it.
Nothing here limits our liability for anything the law does not allow us to limit.
Accessibility
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Our
accessibility statement says where we are against that and what to do if
something is in your way.
Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page tells you when it was last
reviewed.
