Contribute to the archive

We want your memories, photos, flyers, zines and stories, to help preserve LGBTQIA+ history for future generations.

Help us grow our inclusive digital archive

We collect materials relating to LGBTQIA+ history in Brighton and Hove and the south-east of England, where that material has a clear connection to individuals and communities in our city.

Our archive is digital, which means it is online only. It includes materials originally created in a digital format, like digital photos and videos, and it also holds materials that have been added digitally, like a scan of a photo or flyer, or a photograph of a t-shirt.

And our archive is live, which means new items are being added all the time. We need your help to grow our collections and create a lasting record of LGBTQIA+ life in our region, one that reflects everyday experiences as well as moments of joy, resistance and creativity.

FAQs

  • How do I donate an item to the archive?

Fill in the form on this page. You can send one item at a time: a photograph, a flyer, a zine, a recording, or a scan of something you would rather keep hold of. Tell us what it is and where it came from, and one of our team will be in touch.

  • What items can I contribute?

We collect material relating to LGBTQIA+ history in Brighton and Hove and the south-east of England, where it has a clear connection to individuals and communities in our city. The archive is digital, so it holds things made digitally as well as scans and photographs of physical objects: a scan of a flyer, or a photograph of a t-shirt, is as welcome as the object itself.

  • Why should I donate?

The archive is live, and new items are added all the time. Contributions are how it grows into a lasting record of LGBTQIA+ life in our region, one that reflects everyday experience as well as moments of joy, resistance and creativity.

  • Are there any groups you particularly want to hear from?

Yes. We are especially interested in material relating to groups under-represented in similar collections across the region: disabled LGBTQIA+ communities, older lesbian communities, Black, Indigenous and People of Colour LGBTQIA+ communities, and transgender, non-binary and intersex communities.

  • What if I have a whole collection of items?

Please email us rather than using the form. We can help you scan and upload material, and for anything substantial we would rather have a conversation first.

  • What do I do if I want to remove an item I donated?

Email us at archive@marlboroughproductions.org.uk and we will take it down. This applies whether you contributed the item yourself and have changed your mind, or you have come across yourself in a photograph somebody else contributed. We have a takedown policy as part of our Collections Plan, and we remove material on request.

Add to the archive

Around 100 to 200 words. What it is, where it came from, and why it matters to you.

For example, who took the photograph or designed the flyer. Leave it blank if you do not know.

One file: a photograph, a scan, a PDF, or an audio or video recording, up to 50MB. If you have more than one thing to send, please email us.

For example, the date the photograph was taken. A year, or roughly which decade, is plenty.

For example: poster, club, dance, disco. Separate them with commas.

By submitting to the archive you agree that your contribution will be publicly visible on the Queer Heritage South digital archive, and may be used for promotional and educational purposes under the Creative Commons licence Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). You keep ownership of your material.

We will check that your contribution meets our terms and conditions and our Collections Plan before we make it public. Ellie and Siqing review submissions, usually within three working days. We may edit contributions to better reflect their context, such as adding dates, associated places and keywords.

A record of your name and email address is kept alongside your contribution so that we can manage it, and we may contact you for more information. Our privacy notice describes how we handle personal data.

If you have any questions please email archive@marlboroughproductions.org.uk

See our privacy notice for what we do with what you send us.

Keep your stuff

Contributing does not mean giving anything away. Our archive is digital, so a scan or a photograph is all we need, and the original stays with you.

If you would rather not scan it yourself, email us and we can help.
